A unique concert at the Collegiate Church of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul

09 Aug 2024

It is with great joy that we invite you to a unique concert, which will take place on Saturday, August 10 at 7:30 p.m. in the Collegiate Church of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul in Lidzbark Warmiński. The concert program includes works by composers active in Warmia and other creators whose works were performed in Warmia, often in the form of unique arrangements. The sources of these compositions are now seriously incomplete. Most of the pieces were recreated based on organ tablatures and incompletely preserved voice books. The reconstruction of the presented repertoire is the result of multi-threaded research on musical manuscripts, which were previously considered unsuitable for performance purposes.

The reconstruction of the pieces was carried out by the famous organist, Prof. Marcin Szelest from the Academy of Music in Kraków, a long-time lecturer at the Varmia Musica Academia music workshops organized as part of the festival. Marcin Szelest
Professor of organ at the Krzysztof Penderecki Academy of Music in Kraków. He performs as a soloist and chamber musician, including with many historical instrument ensembles (including Concerto Palatino, The Bach Ensemble, Vasa Consort, Weser-Renaissance Bremen, Wrocław Baroque Orchestra). He has recorded for the Accent, CD Accord, Claves, CPO, Motette, Musicon and Warner Classics labels. He also conducts master classes as part of the European Hanse-Ensemble in Lübeck and the Varmia Musica Academia in Lidzbark Warmiński. His habilitation thesis “Stylistic transformations in Italian organ music at the turn of the 16th and 17th centuries” (2007) was awarded the Prime Minister’s Prize. He has published, among others, editions of the complete works of Stanisław Sylwester Sza-rzyński (2015) and Adam Jarzębski (2021) and Braniewo-Oliwski tablatures (2021). The edition of the reconstruction of the repertoire of “Warsaw organ tablature” prepared by him will be released in September 2024. He is also a member of the Scientific Council of the publishing series “Fontes Musicae in Polonia” and the artistic director of the Omnia Beneficia Festival and the 1679.org Festival. Date: August 10
Time: 7:30 PM
Location: Collegiate Church of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul, Lidzbark Warmiński
