Songs of the Spotted Cows at the Culture Orangery in Lidzbark Warmiński

31 Oct 2025

SONGS OF THE SPOTLIGHTED COWS is one of the most interesting books recently published, set in Warmia. We invite you to a meeting with its author, Łukasz Staniszewski, on November 7th at 5:00 PM at the Municipal Pedagogical Library – Orangery of Culture in Lidzbark Warmiński, Krasickiego Street 2. The meeting will be held as part of the OUR LITTLE HOMELAND club. “THE STORY OF A BAD MAN WHO HAD TO SAVE THE WORLD Bernard Witten doesn’t like people, especially dreamers. The problem is that, unfortunately, many of them live in his Warmia village. They believe in diduki, cure illnesses at the Old Woman’s, and spirits whisper in their ears how to live. It’s here that Death reads names off a piece of paper (and sometimes gets it wrong), devils visit the priest, and you can invite a fox to a wedding. Bernard would gladly knock everyone’s teeth out for such nonsense.
However, when a devastating drought descends on Warmia, the sun scorches the land and people, and magic ceases to work, the inhabitants desperately search for help. And only Bernard Witten knows how to save the village from disaster. He believes, however, that changing anything in Warmia is like committing a sin, and a good farmer never changes.
Because there is only one Warmia and one Bernard Witten.

Łukasz Staniszewski is a writer, playwright, and radio drama author.
He made his literary debut in 2020 with the collection of short stories “Little Horrors” and has won numerous literary and theater awards, including the Byrski Award, distinctions from the Theatre Institute, and prose competitions. He is connected to Olsztyn and is inspired by Warmia, where the profane transforms into the sacred. He creates in silence – sometimes for radio, sometimes for theater, always for the people.

The Festival of Books and Illustrations for Big and Small “INSERTING FAIRY TALE” is organized by the Women’s Association “Miej Marzenia”, the “Krasicki” Hotel, the Municipal Pedagogical Library, the Orangery of Culture in Lidzbark Warmiński and co-financed by the Local Government of the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship, the Municipality of Lidzbark Warmiński and the Rural Commune of Lidzbark Warmiński.
