SECRETS OF CARPENTRY 2026 – CRAFTSMANSHIP HIDDEN IN THE WALLS
17 Jul 2026
July 19th at the Museum of Folk Architecture – Ethnographic Park in Olsztynek
How were the walls of ancient rural houses built? What materials were used, and what secrets lie behind structures that have endured for decades, even centuries? Participants will discover the answers to these questions at the “Secrets of Carpentry – Crafts Hidden in Walls” event, which will take place on Sunday, July 19th, from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM at the Museum of Folk Architecture – Ethnographic Park in Olsztynek.
This year’s event will focus on the walls of ancient rural buildings – their construction, materials, and the techniques used by carpenters and builders. Visitors will be able to participate in thematic walks around the open-air museum, during which they will learn about regional architectural solutions and the various wall construction methods used in Warmia, Mazury, and the surrounding areas. The walks will take place at 12:00 PM and 2:00 PM. Participants will also be able to participate in a quiz called “What Don’t You Know About Our Walls?”
in which everyone will win a prize, as well as the ethnographic story “A House Under Care,” which explores ancient customs related to decorating, whitewashing, and the symbolism of rural interiors.
The event will be interactive. Guests will be able to assemble a wooden wall themselves, try their hand at building a clay wall, participate in wood debarking, and learn about traditional carpenter tools.

Those interested can also assemble a model of the Królewo cottage – one of the objects in the museum collection.
There will also be attractions related to wood preservation and old crafts. During the “What’s Squeaking in the Walls?” meeting, you can learn about the organisms that live in wood and how they affect its durability. The program will be complemented by blacksmith demonstrations showcasing the work of a blacksmith and the importance of his profession in the life of the ancient village.
We invite our youngest guests to the wooden playground, and all lovers of folk architecture and traditional crafts are invited to join us in discovering the secrets hidden within the walls of historic buildings.
