A meeting of the Cittaslow network with a Copernican accent

The Assembly of the International Network of Cittaslow Cities in Parma and the town of Polesine Zibello in the Emilia Romagna region in Italy has ended.
The event was accompanied by many regional accents, including: promotion of the figure of Nicolaus Copernicus. New authorities of the global network have been appointed for the next term.

International competition about Nicolaus Copernicus
The jury resolved the international competition about Nicolaus Copernicus, in which over 50 works by children and teenagers from Poland and several other countries were submitted. The results for the best works assessed by the jury and distinctions forthe greatest activity of towns in the competition were announced. Most works were sent from Węgorzewo, Lidzbark, Biskupiec and the towns of Norcia and Orvieto in Italy.
In the 8-12 age category, the winner was the work of Joachim Kirol from Orneta. The second place went to the work of Alan Gawlik from Śledźejowice, and the third to Maja Marchelek and Iga Orłowska from Lidzbark. In the older group (13-17 years old), the works of Dominik Widuch from Lubin (1st place), a group of students from Clervaux in Luxembourg (2nd place) and students from the School Complex in Lubomin (3rd place) were appreciated. The awards were presented by Marshal Gustaw Marek Brzezin and member of the voivodeship board Jolanta Piotrowska.

During the meeting, there were promotional stands of the region and the “Polish Cities of Cittaslow” Association, introducing the figure of the astronomer and the Copernicus Trail to foreign guests. The role of Copernicus was played by Marian Jurak, president of the Warmia-Masuria branch of PTTK. The task carried out by the Association called “From Polish land to Italy – in the footsteps of Nicolaus Copernicus” was financed by the Local Government of the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship under contract No. 10/WM/OKO/2023 of May 15, 2023 in the amount of PLN 7,000.00.

Poles in the network’s management
During the meeting, elections to the network’s authorities were held. Mauro Migliorini became president for the next term, and Jacek Kostka, mayor of Górowo Iławiecki and coordinator of the Polish network, became the first vice-president. The mayors of Lidzbark, Maciej Sitarek, the mayor of Działdowo, Grzegorz Mrowiński, and the mayor of Sianów, Maciej Berlicki, were elected members of the Coordination Committee. Jacek Wiśniowski, mayor of Lidzbark Warmiński, joined the guarantors’ council.

Awards and initiatives
The award in the Chiocciola Orange competition for “best practice in the international Cittaslow association” was awarded to Olecko for the project “strong partnership for a green Olecko”. The city of Sianów in the West Pomeranian Voivodeship had the opportunity to present the results of cooperation with the Italian city of Asolo. Representative of the local government of the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship, Dr. Hanna Wiśniewska was a speaker during the 1st International Forum of Rivers and Lakes, which preceded the Assembly.
The meeting was attended by over 300 people from all over the world. The largest delegations came from Italy, South Korea, Poland, Turkey and the Benelex countries. 5 cities have joined the network, including: from Germany, Belgium, Croatia and Colombia. The event partner was Parma Food Valley.
